What to Expect on Your Climb

The Climb

The tower climb involves ascending 533 steps up a narrow spiral staircase. The stairs are steep and winding, with no elevator access. Most visitors take 20-30 minutes to reach the top, depending on fitness level and how often you stop.

There are a few small platforms where you can rest and catch your breath. The staircase is about 1 meter wide, and you'll share it with people going up and down.

Bell Chamber

At about halfway up, you'll reach the bell chamber where you can see the massive cathedral bells up close. This includes the famous St. Peter's Bell (Dicker Pitter), which weighs 24 tons and is the largest swinging bell in the world.

Signs explain the history and function of each bell. This is a great photo opportunity and rest stop before continuing to the top.

The Summit

At 97 meters (318 feet), you'll reach the viewing platform on the south tower. The platform has metal mesh screens for safety, which can make photography slightly challenging but doesn't obstruct the views significantly.

On clear days, you can see up to 40 km away, including the Siebengebirge mountains. The platform circles the tower, giving 360-degree views of Cologne.

The Views

From the top, you'll have breathtaking views of the Rhine River, Cologne's old town, the Hohenzollern Bridge with its love locks, and the modern city skyline. On one side you'll see the river winding through the city, on the other the cathedral's intricate Gothic spires.

The viewing platform is partially covered, so you can visit even in light rain. Bring a camera - the views are spectacular!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book tower tickets online in advance?

No, tower tickets cannot be booked online. They must be purchased at the ticket office on the south side of the cathedral on the day of your visit. During peak season (summer months), there may be a short wait, but queues typically move quickly.

How long does the tower climb take?

Most people take 20-30 minutes to climb up, with time to stop at the bell chamber. Allow 15-20 minutes at the top to enjoy the views and take photos. The descent takes about 15-20 minutes. Total visit time is usually 45-60 minutes, but you can spend longer if you want.

Is there an elevator to the top?

No, there is no elevator. The only way to reach the top is by climbing 533 steps via a narrow spiral staircase. This makes the tower inaccessible for wheelchair users and difficult for people with mobility issues.

Can I visit both towers?

No, only the south tower is open to visitors. The north tower is not accessible to the public. The south tower viewing platform provides excellent views in all directions, so you're not missing anything by not accessing the north tower.

What if I can't make it to the top?

If you need to turn back, that's completely fine. You can descend at any point. The bell chamber at the halfway point is a good turnaround spot if you can't complete the full climb. Unfortunately, no refunds are given if you don't reach the top.

Is the tower climb worth it?

If you're physically able and comfortable with heights and enclosed spaces, yes! The panoramic views of Cologne are spectacular, and seeing the massive bells up close is impressive. However, if you have mobility issues, fear of heights, or claustrophobia, you might want to skip it.
