1. Bonn
Germany's former capital is the easiest day trip: regional trains run several times an hour and take about 20 to 30 minutes. Walk from the station to the Old Town and the Münsterplatz, visit Beethoven's birthplace, the Beethoven-Haus, and finish on the Rhine promenade. In spring the cherry blossom in the Old Town draws crowds.
2. Brühl: Augustusburg and Falkenlust palaces
Just 15 to 20 minutes by train, Brühl has two 18th-century palaces that together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the grand Augustusburg Palace, with its famous staircase, and the smaller hunting lodge Falkenlust, linked by a park. Brühl is also home to the Phantasialand theme park.
3. Königswinter, Drachenfels and Drachenburg Castle
Across the Rhine from Bonn, the Drachenfels hill rises above Königswinter. A rack railway, running since 1883, climbs to Drachenburg Castle, a 19th-century castle with towers and terraces, and on to the ruins at the top, with views far along the Rhine. Allow a full day, or join a small-group tour with pickup.
4. Düsseldorf
About 25 minutes away, Düsseldorf feels quite different from Cologne: the Old Town by the Rhine, the upmarket Königsallee shopping street and the modern architecture of the MedienHafen. In December it adds seven themed Christmas markets; see Cologne vs Düsseldorf Christmas markets.
5. Aachen
Aachen, near the Dutch and Belgian borders, was Charlemagne's favourite residence. Its cathedral, built around 800, was the first site in Germany named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in 1978. The compact Old Town, the town hall and the local Printen gingerbread make an easy day. Trains take about 35 to 60 minutes.
6. Koblenz and the Middle Rhine valley
For castles and river scenery, head south to Koblenz, where the Mosel meets the Rhine at the Deutsches Eck. Beyond it, the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, winds past hilltop castles, vineyards and the Loreley rock. Trains run along both banks, and in season river boats connect the towns, so you can go one way by train and back by boat.
7. Mosel valley and Cochem
The Mosel is narrower and quieter than the Rhine, lined with steep vineyards. Cochem, with its restored castle above the town, is the best-known stop, about two hours from Cologne by train via Koblenz. It is a long day on your own; a guided tour with a river cruise saves the planning.
8. Brussels or Amsterdam
Both are possible in a day on direct high-speed trains: Brussels in about 1 hour 50 minutes, Amsterdam in about 2 hours 40. It works best if you start early. Coming the other way? See getting to Cologne from the UK via Brussels.
