Short answer: the train is easier than driving. The cathedral stands beside Köln Hauptbahnhof, so arriving by rail puts you at the door. If you do drive, there is no parking at the cathedral itself — use a public garage. The closest is Parkhaus Am Dom, under the cathedral plaza, about a 2-minute walk. Parkhaus Rheingarten and Parkhaus Groß St. Martin are the next nearest (details below).
Central garages fill up on weekends and especially during the Christmas market season (late November to December). On busy days, a Park & Ride car park on the edge of the city plus a tram or S-Bahn into Köln Hbf is usually faster than circling the old town.
The cathedral is in Cologne's pedestrian zone. You cannot drive directly to it, but there are several nearby parking garages.
Note: Cologne's city center is in an environmental zone (Umweltzone). You need a green emissions sticker to enter.
