Quick and cheap: Köln Hauptbahnhof
The main station next to the cathedral is the fastest option. Its food court has fast food (including a McDonald's), Asian dishes, salads, coffee and bakery stalls, plus a REWE To Go shop for drinks and snacks. Many places open early and close late, which makes it handy before an early train or after an evening at the markets.
A café with a cathedral view: Café Reichard
Café Reichard, at Unter Fettenhennen 11, faces the cathedral's west front across the square. Its terrace is the classic place for coffee and cake while looking up at the towers, and it serves breakfast and light meals too. Prices reflect the view.
Traditional Cologne food near the cathedral
The traditional brewhouses around the cathedral serve hearty Rhineland dishes. Two to know: Halve Hahn, a rye roll with Gouda, mustard and onions (despite the name, no chicken), and Himmel un Ääd, mashed potato and apple with black pudding.
Many traditional dishes contain pork, so ask if you avoid it. In the Christmas market season, Reibekuchen (crispy potato pancakes) are the street food everyone queues for.
