Can you set off fireworks at Cologne Cathedral on New Year's Eve?

No. The area around the cathedral is a fireworks-free zone. Last year, from 6 p.m. on 31 December to 5 a.m. on 1 January, no fireworks of any kind could be taken into it, not even sparklers. There were access controls at the entry points, so expect queues if you want to stand near the cathedral at midnight.

Firecracker ban in Cologne city centre

On top of the cathedral zone, Cologne bans bangers (fireworks whose only effect is a bang) in the centre on the cathedral side of the Rhine, inside the Ring road. Last year the ban ran all day on 31 December and 1 January, with fines of up to €200. Rockets and other visual fireworks were not covered by this wider ban.

Where to watch the New Year fireworks in Cologne

Midnight in Cologne is a city-wide show of private fireworks over the Rhine rather than one official display at the cathedral. The city's own advice is to arrive early by public transport if you want to watch from the Rhine bridges. The riverbank in Deutz, across from the Old Town, gives the classic view of the cathedral, the same one photographers use all year (see photo spots). Expect big crowds and dress warmly.

Is Cologne Cathedral open on New Year's Eve?

The Treasury is closed on 31 December and 1 January. Visiting hours for the cathedral itself can differ over the holidays, so check them for both days before you go (see opening hours).

What else is open over New Year

Two Christmas markets keep going: Heinzels Wintermärchen on Heumarkt, with its ice rink, runs until 10 January (11 a.m. to 9 p.m. from 31 December), and the Harbour Christmas Market by the Chocolate Museum until 3 January; check its New Year hours.
