Best areas to stay for the Christmas markets
Cathedral and main station
The cathedral market is on your doorstep and Köln Hauptbahnhof is next door, with trains to the airport and direct services to cities such as Amsterdam and Brussels. The most convenient base, and the first area to sell out.
Old Town (Altstadt)
Between the cathedral and the Rhine, right by Heinzels Wintermärchen on Alter Markt and Heumarkt. The most atmospheric choice in December. Evenings can be lively and loud.
Neumarkt and the shopping streets
Next to Markt der Engel and the Schildergasse shops, with a major tram stop. About 15 minutes' walk to the cathedral.
Rheinauhafen
The modern harbour district by the Harbour Christmas Market and the Chocolate Museum. Quieter at night, and about 20 minutes' walk along the river to the cathedral.
Deutz, across the Rhine
Walk over the Hohenzollern Bridge to the cathedral. The riverbank in Deutz has one of the best views of the cathedral at night. A good fallback when the centre is fully booked.

When to book
The busiest nights are Fridays and Saturdays from late November to mid-December. If you can, visit Monday to Thursday: rooms are easier to find and the markets are calmer, especially before 15:00.
